Super Calculator

Today, one of my students asked me if there was such a thing as a super calculator. He said he tried searching for it in Google but couldn't really find anything. Though I'm sure there are probably some really awesome handheld calculators out there that can do incredible stuff, more easily and more popular are some applications you can download onto your computer and use as a calculator. The three most popular that I have experience with are Maple, Mathematica, and MATLAB. They can each do a lot more than the regular old calculators (even the fancy graphing calculators), plus they're really fast too! I wrote a program with Maple that solves Sudoku puzzles in under a second!

Sounds like a cool calculator!

That's neat that you programmed it to solve Sudoku's... However I love doing them by hand! Two every night before bed.

I sound like an old fart, don't I???
We weren't allowed to use calculators in school, and since I sucked at math (yes, Bobby, my hat is off to you!) I used a calculator at home. It was just a basic basic basic calculator.
I remember in college, upgrading to one that had percents and square roots on them.
Then when I worked in big box retail, I was flatly AMAZED at the calculators they have out now.
Holy crap -- they can do about anything! The concept of a graphing calculator warps my little pea brain!
Now I have a business calculator/adding machine that I can do percents on for consignments, and it makes my life soooo much easier. But I'll be honest, I don't know what half the buttons do!!!
Sometimes you can take the math-challenged boy out of Kentucky, but you can't make him do real math! Or something like that....

Yeah Maple and others are pretty good. Software for the pc is really key.
